Planners to rewrite city zoning codes

Lawrence/Douglas County planning commissioners say they have an enormous task before them — and they want to do it right.

The commission is reviewing and rewriting all of the city’s zoning codes.

Commissioner Myles Schachter says he wants to take the opportunity to shape the future of commercial developments.

Following a planning commission meeting Wednesday morning, Schachter told 6News he would like to see rules written to prevent so-called “mid-level box stores” — such as office depot — from being able to locate in small shopping centers.
