Pirates ruin Ponson’s Giant debut

Sanders' double dooms former teammates in 2-0 Pittsburgh victory

? Reggie Sanders’ two-run double in the eighth spoiled Sidney Ponson’s outstanding debut with the San Francisco Giants and gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a 2-0 victory Wednesday night.

Ponson (0-1), acquired by the NL West leaders in a trade with Baltimore last week, held Pittsburgh scoreless for the first seven innings. He allowed seven hits and retired 10 straight during one stretch, but the Giants couldn’t give him a lead against Pittsburgh starter Josh Fogg, who pitched six shutout innings.

In the eighth, Jason Kendall doubled and Brian Giles walked. Sanders, who played right field for the Giants during last season’s run to the NL pennant, hit Ponson’s 109th pitch over Barry Bonds’ head in left, scoring both runners and snapping the Pirates’ 19-inning scoreless streak.

“I’m not going to sit here and lie and say it’s not (great),” Sanders said. “Every time you step in between those lines, you want to do well — but especially against your former team.”

Ponson then tipped his cap to the Pacific Bell Park crowd after he was removed.

The Pirates won for just the fourth time in their last 21 games in San Francisco, while the Giants lost at home for just the second time in their last 15.

Marlins 7, Cardinals 3

St. Louis — Rookie Dontrelle Willis pitched eight impressive innings, and Ivan Rodriguez homered as Florida beat St. Louis. Willis (11-2), who beat Randy Johnson in his last outing, shrugged off a shaky start to tie the team record for wins by a rookie set by Brian Meadows in 1998. Willis walked Bo Hart on four pitches to start the game and gave up a two-run double to Scott Rolen later in the first, but was virtually unhittable after that.
