Chicago Board of Trade
Wheat prices ended higher Monday on the Chicago Board of Trade, a continuation of last week’s bullish mood.
Corn futures also closed higher, while soybeans retreated.
Soybeans finished lower in a sluggish session after forecasters predicted that the hot, dry weather moving into the western U.S. will not likely reach key growing areas to the east. Corn prices ended higher. Market-watchers attributed the gains to short-covering — the buying of contracts to balance previous sales — ahead of next week’s crop production report. The lack of fresh market news also helped.
Wheat futures finished higher, continuing a rally from last Friday and supported by fund buying amid a lack of commercial selling.
Wheat for September delivery rose 3 cents to $3.54 a bushel; September corn rose 2 3/4 cent to $2.09 1/2 a bushel; September oats fell 4 1/2 cent to $1.35 1/4 a bushel; November soybeans fell 1 1/4 cent to $5.16 1/4 a bushel.
Beef futures finished lower and pork prices were mixed Monday on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
September live cattle fell .25 cent to 77.90 cents a pound; September feeder cattle fell .13 cent to at 90.62 cents a pound; October lean hogs rose .68 cent to 51.80 cents a pound; February frozen pork bellies fell .20 cent to 77.85 cents a pound.
