Storms caused $215.48 million in property and crop damage across Kansas from April through June, according to figures released Friday.

Included in that figure was a May 8 tornado in Lawrence that caused $5 million in damage. Other storms that day across eastern Kansas caused an additional $8.3 million in damage, according to figures from the Kansas Insurance Department.

“We saw a lot of damage in a short period of time,” Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger said. “I expect the loss estimate to increase when we receive reports for the month of July.”

June was the most destructive month of the second quarter, with $83 million in property damage and $5 million in crop damage.

Praeger said she was pleased with the way insurance companies responded to consumer claims. She reminded Kansans who have questions or concerns about claims to contact the department’s Consumer Assistance Division at (800) 432-2482.

A breakdown of Kansas storm and crop damage for 2003:

• April property damage statewide — $13 million.
• May 4 tornado damage in northeast Kansas — $50 million.
• May 4 tornado damage in southeast Kansas — $19 million.
• May 8 tornado in Lawrence — $5 million.
