Sunflower reaches deal to broadcast Royals games

Sunflower Broadband has added the Royals Sports Television Network to its cable television package.

Kansas City Royals games produced by RSTN will be available on channel 6, the city cable outlet’s local channel, Sunflower Broadband general manager Patrick Knorr said Friday.

“We’re 99 percent sure we’ll be able to start with next Tuesday’s game at Boston,” Knorr said. “We need to configure the satellite first and we need some hardware from the Royals, but we expect to have it on Tuesday.”

Knorr had balked at adding the Royals’ television package, citing the high cost, but the two sides came to a compromise Friday and agreed on a five-year deal. The Royals’ impressive start played a role in the negotiations, Knorr said.

“Customer interest was a driving factor for us and the Royals,” he said. “We’re trying to acknowledge that interest.”

In adding RSTN, Sunflower Broadband will have to raise its rates, although not significantly, Knorr said.

“There will be a rate increase, but it will be lower than in recent years,” he said. “We’ll notify our customers at the end of May what it will be, but it won’t go into effect until late in the summer.”

Sunflower Broadband will have to adjust its local programming to accommodate Royals games. For instance, local newscasts at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. will be delayed at times, Knorr said, and in some cases the 6 p.m. news will start at 5:30 p.m.

RSTN is televising all three games of next week’s KC-Boston series from Fenway Park. Since all three of those games will start at 5:05 p.m., the 6 p.m. newscast will be delayed on those days, as will scheduled programs at 6:30 p.m.

“Our local programming would also be affected by extra-inning games and West Coast games,” Knorr said. “We’ll adjust our schedules, though.”

By starting next Tuesday, Sunflower Broadband will be able to carry the 81 games remaining on the RSTN schedule, including 32 from Kauffman Stadium. Another 11 Sunday games will be available on over-the-air channel 38 (channel 15 on Sunflower Broadband).

Sunflower Broadband is part of The World Company, which also owns the Journal-World.
