Des Moines, Iowa ? Kansas University freshman thrower Abby Emsick claimed her fifth consecutive Drake Relays discus title Friday as the KU track and field teams competed in Day Two of the Relays.

Emsick won the women’s university/college division discus throw with a regional-qualifying mark of 171-8, the second-best discus throw in KU history. She also finished 12th in the shot put Friday afternoon with a toss of 45-051¼4.

Emsick, from Council Bluffs, Iowa, was a six-time Drake Relays high school title winner — including four discus titles and two shot-put titles — the most Drake titles ever won by a high school athlete.

The Kansas men’s 4×100 meter relay team of Anson Jackson, Mike Walker, Aaron Thompson and Leo Bookman won its heat and qualified for today’s finals with a time of 41.42.

Jackson also won his heat of the men’s university 110-meter hurdles, recording a time of 13.94 to advance to the finals.

KU’s men’s 4×800 relay team of Cameron Schwehr, Brandon Hodges, Derec Lacio and Jeremy Mims claimed seventh place in 7:33.96.

KU’s Kim Clark also set a performance-best, finishing fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:08.96, the third-best time in Kansas history and a regional-qualifying standard.

KU’s Ferguson wins UMKC steeplechase

Kansas City, Mo. — Kansas sophomore Dan Ferguson won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:38.56, and KU freshman Erik Sloan added a fifth-place finish in the same event Friday at the UMKC Invitational.

KU freshman Adam Fitts took fourth in the hammer throw (160-04) in the first day of competition.

The events will continue today at the Swinney Recreation Center Track Complex/Rockhurst High Track, starting with field events at 9:00 a.m. and running events at 11:45 a.m.
