FCE and 4-H News

The Douglas County Family and Community Education Council will sponsor its annual spring tea at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Building 21 North at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

The program will be “Aprons, Icons of the American Home” by Aliene Bieber, volunteer leader and member of Kanwaka FCE. Music will be provided by Bertha Armstrong.

The program is free and open to the public. For more information, call K-State Research and Extension at 843-7058.

India FCE will meet at 1:15 p.m. Thursday at the home of Faye Young. Bonnie Bond will give the lesson on “Complementary and Alternative Medicine on the Fringe or Cutting Edge?”

The April meeting of the Lone Star 4-H Club was called to order by Libby Queen, president. Members answered roll call by telling where they were born. Club members were reminded that the deadline to add or drop projects is Thursday. If enrollment cards are not turned in to the extension office by Thursday, members will not be allowed to exhibit at the Douglas County Free Fair. Pre-enrollment for the fair is June 30. Fair books will be available at the next meeting.

An initiation ceremony was conducted for new members Carter Gherke, Whitney Gherke and Matthew Ryan.

Casey Waite and Olivia Dilling led the club in singing “Here Comes Peter Cotton Tail.” Leslie Queen gave a current event talk about the future of the grasslands. John Berg and Chris Berg gave a demonstration talk on how to brush dogs’ teeth. Michael Krumm gave a project talk about square dancing.

The next meeting will be May 12 at Wakarusa Valley School. Donations of new stuffed animals will be collected for Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
