Delgado leaves game after breaking up play

St. Petersburg, Fla. — Toronto Blue Jays slugger Carlos Delgado left Wednesday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays with a bruise under his left eye after a hard slide to break up a double play.

Delgado was on first when Eric Hinske hit a grounder to third with one out in the sixth inning. He was hit by Damion Easley’s right knee as the second baseman threw to first.

“It’s not bad, I can see,” Delgado said. “It’s not blurry or anything. It’s just swollen.”

Tom Wilson took over for Delgado at first base in the bottom of the inning.

Mets’ Cone, Burnitz go on disabled list

New York — Losing games and players, the New York Mets made several roster and lineup shifts Wednesday.

Right-hander David Cone and outfielder Jeromy Burnitz were placed on the 15-day disabled list, and the Mets said Roger Cedeno will be replaced in center field by a platoon of Tsuyoshi Shinjo and Timo Perez.

Cedeno is hitting .177 with one homer and four RBIs in 62 at-bats. New York began the night 8-12 and last in the NL with a .225 batting average and 71 runs.

Osuna joins Rivera, Karsay on Yanks’ DL

Anaheim, Calif. — Antonio Osuna joined fellow New York Yankees relievers Mariano Rivera and Steve Karsay on the disabled list Wednesday, a day after straining his right groin.

Osuna, acquired from the Chicago White Sox during the offseason, was hurt in the eighth inning of the Yankees’ 8-3 win over Anaheim on Tuesday while making a pitch to Jeff DaVanon.

The 30-year-old right-hander is 1-1 with a 1.59 ERA in nine games and has stranded all nine runners he inherited.

Rivera, recovering from a strained groin, is scheduled to make his second extended spring training rehabilitation appearance today and hopes to be activated next week.

Alfonseca headed for rehab at Iowa

Chicago — Chicago Cubs closer Antonio Alfonseca will go to Triple-A Iowa Friday to begin a rehabilitation outing and could be activated next week.

Alfonseca has been on the disabled list since March 21 with a strained right hamstring. He threw batting practice Tuesday, and is to throw again today before going to Iowa.

He’ll likely make three or four appearances for Iowa. General manager Jim Hendry said Wednesday that he hopes the right-hander can be activated May 2, when the Cubs return home from a road trip to San Francisco.
