Jayhawks rout Sooners, 11-4

? Kansas University’s baseball team rode the complete-game effort of junior pitcher Ryan Knippschild to an 11-4 victory against Oklahoma Friday at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

Knippschild (7-3) allowed four runs on 12 hits, struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Junior Ryan Baty and seniors Kevin Wheeler and Brandon Shepard each homered for the Jayhawks (30-15, 5-8 Big 12 Conference), but Wheeler easily stood out. He went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs, and his homer was an inside-the-park job.

The Jayhawks jumped in front in the top of the first when Baty drilled a Mark Roberts pitch over the scoreboard in left field for his ninth home run of the season.

Six straight KU batters reached base in the fifth as the Jayhawks scored six runs on five hits and took a 7-0 lead.

Baty was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs, and senior Sean Flynn was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Kansas coach Ritch Price couldn’t help but enjoy the victory.

“Tonight’s win was great effort all the way around,” he said. “Hopefully, this will set the tone for the rest of the weekend.”

The Sooners scored one run in the seventh on Luke Alexander’s homer and added three more in the ninth to make the final score 11-4.

The Jayhawks play the Sooners again at 2 p.m. today.
