Old home town – 25 and 100 years ago today

In 1978 – “It’s all ours,” said City Manager Buford Watson. “We just bought an old mill.” Thus, 10 months after city commissioners authorized “closing” of the Bowersock agreements transferring control of the former mill area on the south bank of the Kansas River to the city, the deal was consummated and a new city hall site was about to begin emerging.

In 1903 – From the Lawrence Daily World of April 14, 1903: “The recent county high school proposition was pretty badly defeated in Clinton Township — 113 votes against it. Records show there were seven colored voters who voted for it. … George W. Maffett is like the fellow who after being licked says it cannot be done again. He says the county high school proposition would be carried if submitted to the voters again this fall.”
