Praeger to speak at women’s health event

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger will be the opening speaker at Lawrence Memorial Hospital’s “All About Women: A Women’s Health Education Day,” from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Breakout sessions will be offered on menopause, hormone-replacement therapy, osteoporosis, nutrition, caring for aging parents, spirituality and health, breast cancer and heart disease.

Lunch and snacks will be provided. Cost is $25 per person.

Pioneer Celebration planned at Bert Nash

Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center will have its 17th annual Pioneer Celebration and 2002 Year in Review event today.

Shirley Martin-Smith will be presented with the Lyn Smith Award for Distinguished Service. Pioneer Awards will be given to Franklin Shontz, professor emeritus of psychology at Kansas University, and Douglas County Sheriff Rick Trapp.

The featured speaker will be E. Kent Hayes, former director of the Bert Nash YESS! program and the Menninger Youth program.

The event will be from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the second-floor meeting rooms at Bert Nash, 200 Maine.
