Women seventh after first round

? The Kansas University women’s golf team is in seventh place after Monday’s first round of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at Jimmie Austin Golf Course.

KU shot an opening-round score of 641 on the par-72 course. Host school Oklahoma leads the 16-team field with a 604.

KU freshman Kendall Schwerman shot a 159 two-round total and is the top Jayhawk performer, tied for 15th place. Freshmen Chelsey Pryor and Tiffany Woods are tied for 23rd at 161, junior Jennifer Bawanan is tied for 27th at 162 and freshman Meredith Winkelmann is tied for 60th at 169.

“Our team handled the conditions and the fact that we are competing with some of the best in the Big 12,” coach Megan Menzel said. “Even with a young team we held our own in a very tough first day.”

The final day of the three-round tournament is today.

KU men’s golf 13th: The Jayhawk men’s golf team is tied for 13th place at the 18-team Western Intercollegiate at Santa Cruz, Calif.

The Jayhawks shot a 300 on the par-70 Pasatiempo Golf Club. Andrew Price is tied for 12th at 71 and was the top KU finisher. Other Jayhawks include: Jason Sigler, 74, tied for 35th place; Chris Marshall, 77, tied for 59th; Tyler Hall, 78, tied for 72nd; Kevin Ward, 81, tied for 84th.

The final two rounds are today.
