Veta M. Spence Forbes

Mrs. Forbes died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Hickory Pointe Care Center in Oskaloosa.

She was born Sept. 8, 1922, in DeQueen, Ark., the daughter of Joel Walter and Ruth Gertrude (Peaslee) Spence. She moved in 1932 with her family to Lawrence and graduated in 1940 from Liberty Memorial High School.

Mrs. Forbes worked for Bell Telephone Co. in Lawrence and Greeley, Colo. She retired in 1977. She was a lifetime member of Church of the Nazarene.

She married Robert J. Forbes on Oct. 4, 1941, in Lawrence. He died June 16, 1997.

Survivors include a son, Freddie Joe Forbes, San Jose, Calif.; a brother, Bernard D. Spence, Bay City, Texas; three sisters, Margaret Penny, Baldwin, Alta Slack, Springfield, Ohio, and Bernice Nehrbass, Perry; and a grandson.

An infant son, Monte Forbes, died earlier.

The family suggests memorials to Lawrence First Church of the Nazarene building fund, sent in care of Barnett Funeral Home, P.O. Box 416, Oskaloosa 66066.
