Take Back the Night events scheduled

A march, survivor circle and performances by local speakers and entertainers will be featured at the annual Womyn Take Back the Night March later this month.

The night is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. April 18 at Buford M. Watson Jr. Park, Sixth and Kentucky streets.

The march is a protest against sexism, misogyny and violence against women and children. It is sponsored by the Womyn’s Empowerment Action Coalition. Co-sponsors include Women’s Transitional Care Services, Rape Victim Survivor Services and the Kansas University Student Senate.

Past Take Back the Night displays have included white sheets, such as the one above, inscribed with the names of hundreds of women and children who have been victims of domestic violence.

Diversity: ‘Tunnel of Oppression’ aims to raise awareness

The Multicultural Resource Center at Kansas University this week will offer an interactive look at racism, sexism and homophobia.

The “Tunnel of Oppression,” which includes video images, recorded voices and role-playing scenarios intended to educate people about the realities of oppression, will run from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and Wednesday, and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday.

The free event is open to the public.

Students and administrators will turn two floors of KU’s Hashinger Hall into a maze for participants. After the tour, participants will meet in small groups to discuss the experience with a university counselor.

The Community Blood Center will collect blood donations in the Brownies blood drive from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday at Langston Hughes School, 1101 George Williams Way, in the multipurpose room.

Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good health. Donors receive cholesterol tests in the mail four to six weeks after donating.

Easter: Baldwin plans egg hunt

The annual Baldwin City Community Easter Egg Hunt will be at 10 a.m. Saturday on the Baker University campus. The event was planned by Rainbow Experience Preschool and the Baker chapter of Delta Delta Delta sorority, and it’s sponsored by several Baldwin and Lawrence-area businesses.

Shriners clowns will make balloon animals at the event, and children may visit with the Easter bunny. The egg hunt will begin at 11 a.m., with five divisions for 1-year-olds to fifth-graders.

The sorority will have a bake sale for a children’s cancer charity. Prize drawings will proceed throughout the day, and there will be a silent auction for one of five gift baskets with donations from area vendors.
