Recount shows Schauner won third spot on city commission

After taking a recount of Tuesday night’s mistake-plagued election, Douglas County election officials announced late Friday afternoon that the outcome was the same as Wednesday — David Schauner, not Lynn Goodell, won the third open seat on the Lawrence City Commission.

First- and second-place winners in the city commission race were unchanged: Mike Rundle and Dennis “Boog” Highberger. The order of finish from Tuesday night’s election results was still the same in the Lawrence school board race. And the bond issue outcome was unchanged — it did not pass.

Douglas County Clerk Patty Jaimes announced the results late Friday afternoon and provided the media with copies of the recounted ballots. See the latest numbers.

The Douglas County Commission then continued its canvass of the recounted ballots and certified the numbers by early evening. Although no candidate has asked for a recount, they have until noon Monday to make such a request.

Commissioners met Friday morning to canvass the ballots and certify the election, but instead they asked Jaimes to recount the ballots to, as Commission Chairman Bob Johnson said, “raise the integrity of the outcome.”

The machine recount began at 11:30 a.m. and lasted through about 1:30 p.m. at the Douglas County Courthouse.

Commissioners also directed Jaimes to include 188 of the 211 “provisional” ballots in the recount.

Election officials discovered early Wednesday they had tallied more than 7,000 votes twice. After taking out the double tallies, Lawrence City Commission candidate Lynn Goodell lost enough ground to let David Schauner climb unofficially into third place, and a two-year commission term.

The change didn’t affect other county election results, including the Lawrence School Board race or the school district’s bond issue.
