Evaluation ordered for suspect in shooting

A Lawrence man charged with attempted murder says he’s hearing voices and having trouble sleeping at night, his attorney said Thursday in court.

“This may be interfering with his ability to communicate effectively with me,” attorney Ken McRae said of his client Antonio E. Floyd.

At McRae’s motion, Douglas County District Judge Michael Malone ordered Floyd, 19, to undergo a mental-health evaluation to see whether he’s fit to stand trial.

Floyd faces felony charges of attempted murder, aggravated intimidation of a witness and aggravated burglary, plus a misdemeanor charge of sexual battery.

Prosecutors allege that on Nov. 5, he came to the home of a woman he thought was going to be a witness against him in a federal cocaine-dealing case. The woman testified last month that Floyd shot her twice in the chest, then twice in the head.

Floyd is now serving a 17-year term for the federal crime.
