Old home town – 25, 40 and 100 years ago today

IN 1978

John C. Kasberger, 57, Lawrence fire chief for the past three years, announced he would retire from his post effective June 30. City officials said a search for a successor would begin immediately and thanked Kasberger for his long service to the community.

A special seating section for VIPs, an expanded club area and possible new fences were in renovation plans for Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium. There was immediate student and faculty opposition to some provisions of the plan submitted by Athletic Director Clyde Walker, a frequent target of these groups.

It appeared the long-awaited Kansas River bridge spans were about to open. Work was three months behind schedule, and contractor penalties were on the table.

IN 1963

About 1,000 attended a Lawrence Country Club Appreciation Night for Dr. H.P. “Penny” Jones, longtime physician and school board member and president. Efforts had been made to keep the event a surprise, but Jones admitted he had “gotten a few hints” about what was coming.

Kansas University proved to be a smash-hit stop for the singing group Peter, Paul and Mary as more than 10,000 turned out in Allen Fieldhouse. The previous peak crowd for the group had been 7,500 at Florida State University.

The election was at hand, and the hottest issue was $195,000 in general obligation bonds to build a public swimming pool at a Broken Arrow Park site.

IN 1903

From the Lawrence Daily World of April 2, 1903: “A game of basketball is being arranged between the Missouri University girls and the Kansas girls. The date has not been set, but the girls here have renewed their regular practices. Mrs. Strong will chaperone the Kansas team. … The Betas entertained very informally at the chapter house on South Tennessee Street last night. The evening was pleasantly spent with music, and refreshments were served. Punch was dispensed in the hall throughout the evening.”
