Vargas accused of steroid use

Commission: Boxer tested positive after De La Hoya fight

? The Nevada Athletic Commission has accused Fernando Vargas of having steroids in his system when he lost to Oscar De La Hoya on Sept. 14.

De La Hoya stopped Vargas in the 11th round, adding the WBA 154-pound title to his WBC title.

Marc Ratner, the athletic commission’s executive director, said Friday that Vargas’ post-fight urinalysis came back positive for stanozolol. It’s the same drug that cost sprinter Ben Johnson his gold medal and world record in the 100 meters at the 1988 Olympics.

Vargas is in Hawaii and could not be reached for comment.

Shelly Finkel, one of his co-managers, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal he isn’t sure whether Vargas will dispute the result, but Finkel insisted if the test is accurate, Vargas must have taken steroids without his knowledge or consent.
