Kansans overload no-call line

? Kansas residents eager to get rid of calls from telemarketers overloaded the phone system Monday trying to get on the state’ first no-call list.

Several thousand people managed to get through Monday by the midnight deadline.

Many others reported problems getting through by phone. Those who did not get registered by Monday can still register but will have to wait until February for their name to go on the official no-call list.

The Kansas attorney general’s office estimated that about 360,000 phone lines or more than one out of five residential phone lines in Kansas would be on the list of numbers not to be called by telemarketers.

A final number is expected to be released this week.

“Three hundred and sixty thousand, that gives you an idea of how much people have wanted this,” said Mark Ohlemeier of the attorney general’s office.

The list takes effect Nov. 1.

Those who couldn’t get through can still sign up for the no-call list between now and Dec. 1. Their names will be placed on an updated no-call list that goes into effect Feb. 1.

People must re-register their numbers every five years.

The list will block calls from most telephone solicitors, though people on the list can still get calls from charities, political organizations and businesses with whom they’ve interacted in the past 36 months.
