San Francisco up two in wild-card race

? Another no-decision for Kirk Rueter, another big win for the San Francisco Giants.

Jeff Kent and Benito Santiago hit solo home runs in the ninth inning and the Giants kept their two-game lead over the Los Angeles for the NL wild-card slot, beating the Milwaukee Brewers, 3-1, Sunday.

Rueter limited Milwaukee to one run and three hits in seven innings.

Rueter’s record remained 13-8 but the Giants are 11-0 in games in which he starts and gets no-decision.

Felix Rodriguez (8-6) got one out for the victory. Robb Nen pitched the ninth for his 41st save in 49 chances.

Kent’s 37th homer came with one out against Luis Vizcaino (5-2) and broke a 1-all tie. A batter later, Santiago hit a 420-foot drive to center field.

Santiago’s homer was the 200th of his 16-year major league career.

Dodgers 4, Padres 3

San Diego Pinch-hitter Mike Kinkade singled home the go-ahead run with two outs in the ninth inning as Los Angeles prevented NL West leader Arizona from clinching a playoff spot. Kinkade singled up the middle off lefty Kevin Walker and Mark Grudzielanek scored from second, just ahead of the throw from center fielder Mark Kotsay. Grudzielanek had singled off Jonathan Johnson (1-2) and stolen second.

Phillies 4, Reds 3

Cincinnati Not even a start by 37-year-old Jose Rijo could help the Reds avoid a three-game sweep in the final series at Cinergy Field. Bobby Abreu extended his hitting streak to a career-high 16 games and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth on Travis Lee’s double off Rijo (5-4), who lasted 4 2/3 innings.

Rockies 11, D’backs 7

Denver Todd Helton homered and drove in five runs to lift the Colorado Rockies to their third straight win over Arizona. Brian Fuentes (2-0) pitched two innings to earn a win for the second day in a row.

Cardinals 7, Astros 3

St. Louis Albert Pujols hit a three-run homer and Chuck Finley pitched seven solid innings for his 199th career victory. He won for the first time in five starts since Aug. 27. He was 0-1 in his previous four starts, allowing 14 earned runs in 19 1/3 innings.

Braves 4, Marlins 1

Atlanta Greg Maddux joined Cy Young as the only pitchers to win 15 or more games in 15 consecutive seasons and John Smoltz tied the NL record for saves in a season. Smoltz pitched a perfect ninth for his 53rd save in 57 chances, tying the record shared by Randy Myers of the Chicago Cubs in 1993 and San Diego’s Trevor Hoffman in 1998.

Expos 5, Mets 1

New York Vladimir Guerrero closed in on joining the 40-40 club, hitting his 38th homer and stealing his 40th base. Endy Chavez extended his hitting streak to 12 games and Michael Barrett added an RBI double.

Pirates 5, Cubs 4

Pittsburgh Rob Mackowiak’s tiebreaking single helped Kris Benson win his fifth straight decision. Mike Williams got three outs for his 44th save in 48 chances.
