KU’s Redwine staying put

Kansas University track coach Stanley Redwine says he is not interested in taking over the University of California’s men’s and women’s track programs.

California sources on Sunday indicated KU’s third-year coach was a finalist for the Bears’ vacancy along with Chris Huffins, a former Cal decathlete who’s an assistant at Georgia Tech.

“From the sound of things, Chris Huffins will get the job because I’m not interested,” Redwine said Sunday. “I am very excited about what is going on here. We’ve been working hard getting good recruits, and our coaches and athletes are very excited about our program at Kansas.”

Richard Konzem, KU’s senior associate athletic director who led the search committee that tapped Redwine as Gary Schwartz’s replacement, said he was “aware the University of California is interested in coach Redwine. We’ve had very, very good discussions with Stanley indicating how pleased we are to have him as our coach.”

Redwine said the fact other schools like Cal want to pursue him “is an honor as far as people appreciating what is going on at Kansas. We are excited about what is happening here.”
