Bridge over Kasold Drive to be closed for repairs

Starting Monday, motorists will not be able to cross the Kansas Turnpike on the Kasold Drive bridge while road crews repair its concrete deck.

The repairs are tentatively scheduled to begin Monday and will close Kasold Drive (County Road 438) from Peterson Road to Lakeview Road for approximately four weeks, the Douglas County Public Works Department said.

A detour using Peterson Road, North Iowa Street and Lakeview Road will be posted to route traffic around the bridge.

The Kansas Turnpike Authority also will close one lane of U.S. Interstate 70 in each direction while the work proceeds overhead.

The repairs will include removing and replacing a large part of the concrete deck to replace deteriorated concrete. The repairs are being done to ensure the bridge remains in service until it can be replaced, no earlier than 2006.

Homecoming parade to disrupt city traffic

Lawrence High School will kick off its Homecoming celebration with a parade near downtown today.

Musicians, floats and at least one cowboy on horseback will depart at 2:30 p.m. from the Douglas County Judicial & Law Enforcement Center, 11th and Massachusetts streets.

They’ll travel south to Babcock Place, where the band will perform briefly for Babcock residents.

The parade route turns west at 19th Street and ends at LHS, 19th and Louisiana streets.

LHS Principal Dick Patterson, who is retiring at the end of the 2002-2003 school year, will lead the parade on a horse for the final time.

Student arrested after alleged threat to teacher

A 10-year-old boy was arrested by Lawrence Police Tuesday after he allegedly shouted obscenities and threatened a teacher.

Police were called about noon to Schwegler School, 2201 Ousdahl Road, after the student caused the disturbance, Sgt. Mike Pattrick said.

The boy also reportedly threw a metal object at a 37-year-old female teacher, Pattrick said. The object, however, was never found.

The boy was taken to the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center. No other information about his status was available.
