Junction City: Herington mother, son killed in car accident

A Herington woman and her 5-year-old son died in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 77, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.

The accident happened around 6:50 a.m. Monday about six miles south of Junction City.

The patrol said Nicole E. Chavers, 32, was southbound with three children in her car when she swerved to avoid a northbound pickup truck that had crossed into her lane. The pickup swerved back into its own lane at the same time and collided with Chavers’ car, the patrol said.

Chavers was pronounced dead at the scene. Her children were flown to a Wichita hospital, where 5-year-old Drew Chavers was pronounced dead, the patrol said.

Oakley: Suspect takes own life after police chase

A man wanted in Colorado shot himself to death early Monday after a police chase in northwest Kansas, authorities said.

Logan County Sheriff Pat Parsons said a stolen Colorado vehicle was seen just before midnight in Sherman County and pursued by authorities east on Interstate 70.

Just west of Colby, the vehicle went around a roadblock and headed south on Kansas Highway 25.

Shots were being fired from the vehicle and as it entered Logan County, law enforcement officers used spikes to flatten the tires, causing the driver to lose control and wreck in a ditch on U.S. Highway 40.

No shots were fired by officers, Parsons said.

The vehicle belonged to a man whose body was found Saturday in western Colorado, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office said. The man’s identity was not released.

Haynes said two suspects have been questioned, but no arrests had been made Monday.

Police have not released the identity of the victim or the suspects.
