Freshmen lead Jayhawks to 3-0 win over Tulsa

? Kansas University’s Caroline Smith scored two goals for the second consecutive game and another freshman, Holly Ryder, accounted for another goal, as the Jayhawks blanked Tulsa University, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in non-conference soccer at the Hardesty Sports Complex.

The win completes the Jayhawks’ first weekend sweep this year, as they also downed Arkansas, 3-2, on Friday.

KU (4-1-1) controlled the match from the outset, as Smith scored her first goal 12:33 into the match.

The Jayhawks outshot the Golden Hurricane, 10-3 in the first half.

Less than three minutes into the second half, Smith scored her second goal at the 47:48 mark, when she took a pass from sophomore Rachel Gilfillan and drilled the shot into the the right corner of the net.

Smith, of Edina, Minn., scored four goals over the weekend and now leads KU with six, including game-winners.

KU added an insurance goal at the 75:16 mark, when Ryder scored her first goal as a Jayhawk, striking from 15 yards off a corner kick from senior Lindsay Hunting.

KU coach Mark Francis was pleased.

“We defended and moved the ball around very well today, creating lots of opportunities for us to score.” Francis said. “It was the best 90 minutes of soccer we have played so far this year. It’s great for us to get two wins on the road, especially early in the season.”
