KU sweeps Purdue for Classic title

Another tournament, another title for the Kansas University volleyball team.

The Jayhawks defeated Purdue 30-19, 30-27, 30-23, and captured the Jayhawk Classic title on Saturday at the Horejsi Center. It marks the seventh straight regular-season tournament title Kansas has won, dating to 1999.

Kansas defeated both Southeast Missouri and Marquette 3-0 on Friday, rolling through the four-team tournament without losing a single game.

“I didn’t think we’d win nine games without losing any,” Kansas coach Ray Bechard said. “I know Marquette and Purdue didn’t have their best matches, but maybe that’s got something to do with how we’re playing, too.”

Kansas was led by two freshmen, Josiane Lima and Andi Rozum. Lima hammered 17 kills on Saturday and Rozum contributed 42 assists, earning each an All-Tournament Team selection.

Jayhawks Jennifer Kraft and Ashley Michaels also made the team.

“I have so many options,” said Rozum, a setter who also had four kills. “I trust that they’ll put it away.”

Rozum came to KU with big shoes to fill, replacing Molly LaMere, who finished her decorated career last year ranked second in assists in school history.

“I’m a lot more comfortable now,” Rozum said.

“I was very nervous in the beginning, but I’ve kind of settled down a little bit.”

As for Lima, her 38 kills in the three matches this weekend earned her tournament Most Valuable Player honors.

“Lima just knows how to play,” Bechard said. “She’s very talented and I was extremely pleased.”

Purdue kept close early in all three games, but late offensive spurts by the Jayhawks doomed the Boilermakers.

Purdue finished in third place at the tournament, Marquette placed second and Southeast Missouri State finished fourth.

KU is 8-0 heading into Wednesday’s conference opener at Texas A&M. They’ve won 24 of 25 games this season, their only loss coming against Wichita State last Tuesday.

“I told the team, on Wednesday the landscape is going to change,” Bechard said.

“Once you get into the conference it’s going to be a difficult match every night.”
