Baker bashes Avila

? If Baker University football fans were watching Ramon Barber on Saturday night at Liston Stadium, they probably didn’t get a good look at the Wildcats’ new uniforms.

The sophomore running back was an orange-and-navy streak scampering down the sidelines. And when he wasn’t in the game, he was staying loose or washing off the mud caked on his new duds.

But Barber certainly left an impression, rushing for 209 yards on 29 carries in Baker’s 22-3 home-opening victory against Avila University.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long,” said Barber, who had missed the last two seasons because of an ACL injury to his right knee.

While Barber said his knee is not quite completely healed  his range of mobility is still quite limited  he’s thrilled just to be out on the field.

Barber had touchdown runs of 61 and 16 yards and accounted for all but three yards of the Wildcats’ rushing attack.

“He was great tonight,” Baker coach John Frangoulis said. “We haven’t had 200 yards rushing in a game in five or six years.”

Barber had eight carries and 61 rushing yards on Baker’s opening drive.

BU quarterback Martin Updike overcame three fumbled snaps on the initial drive and orchestrated the 80-yard, 16-play march, which was capped with fullback Scott Lane’s touchdown plunge from a yard out.

“I hope they were happy,” Barber said of the BU faithful. “I can’t hear anything when I’m out there running.”
