Cowboys’ Nguyen out 6-8 weeks

Irving, Texas Cowboys linebacker Dat Nguyen had surgery on his broken right wrist Monday and will miss 6-to-8 weeks.

Nguyen, whose 172 tackles last season were the second most in team history, was injured during the 19-10 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday night. He continued to play, tying for the team lead with seven tackles and recording a sack.

Also, the Cowboys signed receiver Darnay Scott and cleared room for him on the roster by releasing offensive lineman Char-ron Dorsey. Scott is expected to be a third or fourth receiver next weekend against Tennessee.

Screw inserted in Kearse’s foot

Nashville, Tenn. Tennessee Titans defensive end Jevon Kearse had a screw inserted into his broken left foot Monday, and could return in six weeks.

Kearse broke the fifth metatarsal bone, located on the outside of his foot, on the second play from scrimmage Sunday in a 27-24 victory against Philadelphia. He immediately reached for his foot after hurdling teammate Henry Ford while chasing Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.

“It was not a serious fracture,” Titans coach Jeff Fisher said. “The screw was placed there just to stabilize it and speed up the healing process.”

Vikings TE Chamberlain hobbled by knee strain

Eden Prairie, Minn. Minnesota Vikings tight end Byron Chamberlain has a strained left knee that could sideline him for a few weeks.

Chamberlain strained the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the first half of Minnesota’s 27-23 loss to Chicago on Sunday.

Coach Mike Tice spoke vaguely about Chamberlain’s status Monday but indicated Chamberlain could be out a couple of weeks.

Conway’s career could be in jeopardy

Ashburn, Va. Brett Conway’s career could be over because of a torn leg muscle.

Conway hurt his leg kicking a field goal in the first half of the Redskins’ 31-23 victory over Arizona on Sunday. He arrived at Redskins Park on Monday holding a large white envelope that contained his MRI exam results.

“It shows a lot of tears in it,” Conway said. “It’s probably the worst I’ve seen.”

The tears are in the quadriceps muscle, and it’s the fourth major injury in Conway’s career. Last month, he was sidelined with a hip flexor. At 27, he realizes his career is in jeopardy.

In six NFL seasons, Conway has hit 55 of 72 field goals, including a career-long of 55 yards. He also is 83-of-84 on extra-point attempts.

Coach Steve Spurrier said Monday he is looking at James Tuthill to replace Conway.
