Melvin Keith Barnhart

Grain Valley, Mo. Services for Melvin Keith Barnhart, 62, Independence, Mo., will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Grain Valley. Additional services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Washington Creek Church of the Brethren, southwest of Lawrence, Kan. Burial will be in Washington Creek Cemetery.

Mr. Barnhart died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, from injuries received when he was struck by a vehicle.

He was born Feb. 6, 1940, in Ottawa, Kan., the son of Clarence Clifford and Pearl Olive (Firestone) Barnhart. He grew up in the Centropolis, Kan., area and attended area schools, graduating from Overbrook High School in 1958.

Mr. Barnhart attended U.S. Trade School and was a diesel mechanic for Victor L. Phillips Construction Equipment in Kansas City, Mo., for the past 15 years. He was an Army veteran, serving with military police in Hawaii from 1962 to 1964.

He married Wanda Shakleford in 1970. They later divorced.

Survivors include two daughters, Melissa Kay Shelf, Grain Valley, and Beverly Lynn Barnhart, Columbia; a son, Keith Alan, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Sharon Lair, Smithville; two brothers, LaVern, Carbondale, Kan., and Clifford, Havensville, Kan.; and a grandson.

The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church and after 10 a.m. Thursday at Washington Creek Church of the Brethren.
