Kansas university: Police seek rape suspect

Kansas University Public Safety Officers are searching for a man who may have raped a female KU student on Saturday in her residence hall room.

Between 4 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., the woman was lying in bed but not sleeping when a man entered her room through the unlocked door, Lt. Schuyler Bailey said.

The woman, who told police she was unsure how long the man was in her room, described him as a 5-foot, 9-inch white male with red-tinted brown hair in a buzz cut, Bailey said.

The report of rape and aggravated burglary occurred in Oliver Hall, 1815 Naismith Drive.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the public safety office at 864-5900 or KU Crime Stoppers at 864-8888. Callers to Crime Stoppers may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a cash award if the tip leads to the apprehension of the suspect.

Public health: Water pipeline repaired; boil order continues

Rural Water District No. 4 issued a boil order Monday after one of its main lines broke on Sunday.

District officials repaired the break Monday. They expect the order to be lifted by Wednesday.

“This is a normal break,” said district spokeswoman Phyllis Stone. “Contamination shouldn’t be a problem, but we’re taking precautions.”

The boil order, she said, applied to all of the district’s 1,000 rural customers between Baldwin, Eudora and southern Lawrence.

District officials blamed the break on contractions caused by dry conditions.

The event was sponsored by Kids Voting Kansas, the Kansas Press Assn. and Secretary of State’s Office. The Journal-World has sponsored Kids Voting in Douglas County since 1992.
