School of Social Welfare plans career fair at KU

The School of Social Welfare at Kansas University will hold a career carnival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday in the Kansas Union Ballroom.

About 50 employers from Kansas and Missouri will be available to meet with graduating students and those interested in social work professions, including public school service, policy analysis, community organizing and advocacy, mental health service and welfare.

Admissions personnel from KU’s social work program and University Career and Employment Services also will be available to meet with current and prospective students.

Farmers invited to farm bill meeting

Nortonville Crop producers, farm landlords and others working to translate the latest farm bill into real practice are invited to an informational meeting this week in Jefferson County.

The Farm Bill Educational Meeting is set for 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Nortonville. It is sponsored by the extension councils of Jefferson and Atchison counties.

Scheduled to explain recent updates to the 2002 farm bill are two USDA Farm Service Agency county directors: Johnathon Alley of Jefferson and Douglas counties, and Rick Abel of Atchison County.

The meetings are open to the public. Organizers ask that people interested in attending call ahead to ensure that enough printed handouts are available; call the Atchison County office at (913) 833-5450, or the Jefferson County office at (785) 863-2212.

Fall Festival is this week

A potluck and ghost stories will be highlights of this year’s Fall Festival, set for Wednesday.

“Treat yourself to a Halloween party” will begin at 11:30 a.m. in Building 21 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. Costumes and masks are encouraged, but they are not required.

The event is sponsored by the Douglas County Family and Community Education Council. It is free and open to the public.
