Hayden stuffs Baldwin

Bulldogs' ground game grounded in 28-14 loss

? Baldwin High had averaged 271 rushing yards per game entering Friday’s football game against Topeka Hayden 145 from running back Micah Mason.

But Hayden shut down the Bulldogs’ running game holding BHS to 43 yards on the ground and Mason to 19 yards and the Wildcats beat Baldwin, 28-14, at Hayden Field.

“They did a great job against our running game,” Baldwin coach Mike Berg said. “Their speed is phenomenal. We’ve played teams that are not that fast this year, but they had some speed.”

Hayden (8-1 overall, 2-0 district) used that speed on offense, too. The Wildcats gained 294 yards on the ground, with quarterback Jarod Tetuan and running back Steve Schuster each rushing for more than 120 yards.

Despite the teams’ penchants for running, Baldwin (5-3, 1-1) scored first on an 80-yard pass from Josh Kesinger to Andy Hannon in the first quarter, burning cornerback Mitch Tetuan.

Two possessions later, Hayden tied the score on a four-yard run by Jarod Tetuan. He also scored on the Wildcats’ next drive, a 14-yard run that put Hayden up 14-7.

Danny Faught scored on a four-yard run on the first drive of the second half, giving Hayden a 21-7 lead, but Baldwin settled down and held Hayden to just 66 rushing yards the rest of the half.

“We just made some adjustments up front,” Berg said. “When somebody runs the option, you’ve got to adjust or they’re going to keep doing the same thing. We adjusted and we were flying to the football a little bit better and our kids played harder.”

Baldwin again went to Hannon two drives later, finding the junior for gains of 17 and 35 yards before fullback Brian Lauridsen scored on a 26-yard run that brought the Bulldogs within a touchdown.

“I want our offense to be balanced,” Berg said, “but if we have to go to the big play we’ve got some of those type of kids. We’re going to continue to do that because it loosens up the defense a little bit.”

Baldwin running back Brian Lauridsen, center, breaks a run outside and follows the lead block of lineman Ricky Spotz (73). The Bulldogs fell to Topeka Hayden, 28-14, on Friday in Topeka.

Hayden’s defense tightened around Hannon the rest of the game. Cornerback Blake Bueltel who replaced Mitch Tetuan in the third quarter picked off three Kesinger passes intended for Hannon in the final period, returning the third for a touchdown.

“They knew we were behind and we had to go for the big ball,” Berg said. “It’s a gamble we had to take. That’s a pretty good corner and he did his job, but we know Andy can make the big play, so we didn’t want to go away from him.”

Baldwin, tied with Santa Fe Trail for second in District 6, will travel to Perry to face Perry-Lecompton at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Hayden and Santa Fe Trail will play at 7 p.m. Thursday in Carbondale.
