Basehor ? It was tough to hear the players’ cheers Friday after Tonganoxie’s 66-13 blowout victory against Basehor-Linwood, because the Chieftain cheerleaders were serenading coach Mark Elston on his 39th birthday.

A quick scan of the scoreboard could not explain how the “Tongie Train” had rolled past the Bobcats, 0-8, at Kiester Field.

Nor could a smiling Elston, who said “It sure was fun,” as he watched his players whistling and chugging their arms in a circular, train-like motion.

Glorified celebrations are going to happen when a coach has his biggest victory in three years in an all-important district game. But Friday’s truly fun moments, at least for Tonganoxie, came on the field.

The Chieftains, 4-4, drove 80-yards on 11 plays on their first possession, culminating when junior quarterback Justin Walker scampered eight yards up the middle for a touchdown.

Tongie’s QB-in-the-end zone theme didn’t end there.

Senior quarterback Troy Morando, who has shared time with Walker, started the second quarter with a scoring run from six yards out.

“I’ve been dreaming of beating these guys like this for a long time,” Morando said. “We just started having fun out there and made it a contest to see who could have the best night.”

Hard to tell, because each Chieftain quarterback had impressive numbers and a handful of scores.

On back-to-back possessions in the third quarter, the two rushed for 151 yards on just two carries.

Walker edged Morando on total yards, rushing for 220 on 13 carries. Morando tallied 214 yards on 19 carries.

Walker also notched five scores to Morando’s three.

“That was the first night where we’ve had an opportunity to get going like that,” Walker said. “The holes just opened up and we didn’t make any mistakes.”

Neither did their teammates, holding Basehor scoreless until the final five minutes.

By halftime, Basehor had amassed just 11 yards, while Tonganoxie had 300.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at Tonganoxie, but recent rains rendered the Chieftains’ field unplayable.
