Bernard A. Younger

? Services for Bernard A. Younger, 74, Hays, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at The Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays. Burial with military honors will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.

Mr. Younger died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at Hays Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 20, 1928, near Catherine, the son of Jacob P. and Catharine (Mader) Younger. He graduated from Catherine Grade School in 1943.

Mr. Younger was an oil field pumper until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951. He served at Camp Polk, La., and was honorably discharged as a corporal in 1953.

He was the area Sunray/DX petroleum jobber from the late 1950s until 1963. He started Younger Propane Inc. in 1963 and sold the business in 1995. He was a farmer and rancher, and he owned B.A. Younger Oil Co.

Mr. Younger was a lifetime member of third- and fourth-degree Knights of Columbus and American Legion of Hays, and he was a member of the Kansas LP Gas Assn.

He married LaVerna Marie Braun on June 10, 1952. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include four daughters, Jean Younger, Lawrence, Janet Montz, Green River, Wyo., and Jolene Windholz and Joan Steinkuhler, both of Hays; two sons, Jim and Jeff, both of Hays; two brothers, Tom and John, both of Victoria; three sisters, Lucille Miller, Topeka, Pat Younger, New York City, and Nadine Pedersen, Parker, Colo.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at Hays Memorial Funeral Chapel, where there will be a Daughters of Isabella rosary at 6:30 p.m., a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The family suggests memorials to the Inpatient Oncology Unit of Hays Medical Center, the church building fund or American Diabetes Assn. of Wichita. They may be sent in care of the funeral home at 20th and Pine, Hays 67601.
