Biffle bags fourth Busch pole of season

? Points leader Greg Biffle grabbed his fourth pole this season Friday with a lap of 116.817 mph in qualifying for the Busch Series Sam’s Town 250 at Memphis Motorsports Park.

Biffle bumped Randy LaJoie, who won here last year, off the pole as he turned the .75-mile oval in 23.113 seconds in his Ford. Now Biffle, who won his first Craftsman Trucks series race on this track, wants to pad his 168-point lead over Jason Keller with five races remaining this season.

“It’s really a boost in team confidence right now,” Biffle said of his pole. “I haven’t been qualifying worth a dang.”

Biffle’s best start in the past three races had been eighth at Dover, and his last pole came Aug. 31 at Darlington when rain washed out qualifying and gave him the top spot based on points. He has four victories this year but has not won since Aug. 3 at Indianapolis.

“Keller qualified 14th. Believe me, I’m keeping an eye on where he’s at,” Biffle said.

Johnny Sauter (116.792) will start next to Biffle, followed by LaJoie (116.792), rookie Shane Hmiel (116.460) and David Reutimann (116.424). Chevrolets took four of the five top spots.

Chevrolets have dominated this race in the Busch Series’ first three visits to this track, taking 12 of the top 15 top-five finishing positions.

Jamie McMurray, who became the quickest first-time winner in NASCAR’s modern era last week by winning his second Winston Cup start, will start 37th today after honoring his commitment to race here.

Biffle thought he cost himself the pole when he rubbed the curb at the edge of the apron in turns one and two. He finished qualifying and was told he had the pole. But as the 25th car out of 55 cars, he never expected his time would stand up at track where Jeff Green set the qualifying record of 120.267 in 2000.

“That says how good our car was, how quick,” Biffle said.

Biffle races well in Tennessee. He took his first pole this season at Nashville in June, jump-starting his season.

LaJoie is enjoying his best starting position since the first race of the season at Daytona. He also started third there. LaJoie, who has only one top-10 finish since June, is looking for a victory to continue a streak of winning at least one race in six straight years.

“Hopefully, it’s not my best chance, but it’s going to be one of the better starting positions. I’m doing everything I can to keep my streak alive because not winning, it pretty much sucks,” LaJoie said.
