Area Roundup: Bulldogs knocks off another unbeaten

Mason's 237 yards lead surging Baldwin past previously perfect Santa Fe Trail

? Micah Mason ran for 237 yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries in Baldwin’s 34-20 victory against previously unbeaten Santa Fe Trail at Liston Stadium.

It was the second straight week that the Bulldogs had given a team its first loss. Baldwin defeated Eudora, 33-32, last week.

“I’m just so proud of our kids,” Baldwin coach Mike Berg said, “and the way they came back after the Eudora game.

“They’re just playing some good ball right now.”

Mason scored on runs of 3 and 72 yards in the second quarter and two 4-yard runs in the fourth.

“It was a very big game for Micah,” Berg said. “It just goes to show you that our offensive line came out to play.

“He got a lot of yards after he got hit.”

The Chargers (6-1) led 6-0 after the first quarter on a 10-yard run by Shane Miles, but the Bulldogs (5-2) scored 19 points in the second period and led 19-14 at halftime.

Miles gave Santa Fe Trail the lead on the first play of the second half with a 74-yard pass to Cameron Babb, but Mason’s two scoring runs in the final quarter gave Baldwin the victory.

Babb finished with five catches for 111 yards, and Miles was 10-of-22 passing for 165 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Santa Fe Trail also lost one of two fumbles.

“They are a very explosive team offensively,” Berg said. “And they had some big plays on us but we were able to make them turn the ball over at crucial times.”

Baldwin will travel to Topeka Hayden and Santa Fe Trail will play host to Perry-Lecompton on Friday.
