Brewer takes title

Leawood golfer wins event at Alvamar

The radiant red numbers and glittery gold names lit up the Kansas Golf Assn.’s scorecard like a Christmas tree Tuesday but tough greens ensured the Senior Series Championship was no holiday.

“I had five three-putts,” said Leawood’s Ron Brewer.

And he won.

Brewer overcome his gory greens with a 7-over-par 151 to win the KGA senior championship at Alvamar Country Club by a stroke over Overland Park’s Mitch Bowen.

“It’s a very tough course, and when the greens are in this good of shape, the life of play is that players are going to average three or four three-putts a round,” Brewer said.

A handful of triple-putts per round from a five-time Kansas senior golfer of the year who made it to the Sweet 16 of this year’s U.S. Senior Open?

“Yeah, they were real greasy,” said Kent Beisner, an Alvamar member who shot 77 Monday and needed to shoot in the low 80s Tuesday to qualify for the Ozark Senior Challenge.

Instead, the Lawrence resident fired an 88 in part because of a sluggish short game and won’t be among the 12 Kansans making the trip to Arkansas later this month.

The top eight super-seniors, those 65 and older, will compete against the Kansas City Golf Assn. Oct. 21 in the Senior Cup match.

Ron Brewer of Leawood tees off. Brewer won the event Tuesday at the KGA Senior Series Champioinship at Alvamar Country Club with a two-day score of 7-over 151.

Bill Morse won the super-senior division with a 160, three strokes better than Dave Dennis.

Yet the older elders didn’t fare any better in the quick-paced putting game.

“It’s hard for them, it’s hard for everyone,” KGA executive director Kim Richey said. “A lot of them get real frustrated shooting higher scores than they’re used to.”

Even Brewer, who all but secured the championship with a birdie on No. 17, then followed that green gem with yep a final three-putt.

“I played well,” Brewer said. “The putting was … it’s the toughest venue we’ve played at.”
