Cold weather greets Lawrence

Many Lawrence residents had to get reaquainted with sweaters, jackets and coats Monday morning the overnight temperature had dipped down to 33.

“We haven’t been that cold since May 3,” says Matt Makens, 6News meteorologist.

We’ll continue to need those jackets until early Monday afternoon, he said. Monday’s high is expected to get up to 68 by mid afternoon, with only a few clouds.

Monday night’s temperature will not be quite as cold, with the low dipping to 44.

Tuesday will have more normal early October weather, with the high reaching 74 under partly cloudy skies, he said. The early morning temperature Wednesday will drop to 47.

Highs Wednesday through Friday will be in the 70s, with rain chances less than 10 percent, he said.

“I don’t think it’s going to rain this week until Saturday and Sunday, and that could mean problems for homecoming for KU’s parade and rain for the game,” he said.

Last weekend, Lawrence received 0.26 of an inch of rain at the Lawrence Municipal Airport, which brought the total rainfal for October up to 1.42 inches.

For the year, Lawrence has had 22.99 inches of rain, which is nearly 10 inches below normal. The average rainfall by Oct. 7 is 32.91 inches.
