The final official day of the Lawrence United Fund campaign drive arrived, and the workers had collected only about $200,000 toward the goal of $254,000. Officials said a drive extension would begin as soon as it could be orchestrated.

Kansas University Chancellor Archie Dykes said he was optimistic about KU funding prospects, including a 7 percent faculty pay hike. Gov. Robert Bennett was also upbeat about the chances of good support from the coming Kansas legislative session.

IN 1962

Kansas University’s Jose Maria de Osma, professor emeritus of Spanish and Portuguese, died at his home. A native of Barcelona, Spain, he had been instrumental in creating the Spanish section of the KU Romance Languages Department.

The fifth major theft in less than two years occurred at the KU Museum of Art with the disappearance of an $8,000 bonze statue by early 20th century sculptor George Kolbe. Studies were being made about the security system there and how to improve it.
