Olathe ? Police on Tuesday were investigating the death of an Olathe man who stabbed himself and may have also killed his 19-year-old wife, authorities said.

Guillermo Quintanilla, 20, died of two fatal kitchen-knife slashings across his abdomen, Olathe Police Capt. Mel Richey said. Police confirmed that Quintanilla had stabbed himself. His wife, Courtney Quintanilla, was cut at least twice on her abdomen.

The two were found dead in their apartment when Courtney’s parents checked on their daughter after she failed to show up for work at an Olathe pre-school, police said.

Courtney Quintanilla was found dead in a bedroom. Her husband, found in another room, was taken to KU Med, where he was pronounced dead.

Police believe the attack happened Sunday night, just before the couple would have marked 10 months of marriage on Monday.

“They’d been having marital problems,” Richey said. “They weren’t getting along well.”

Police were awaiting autopsy results on Courtney Quintanilla.

The Quintanillas had been high school sweethearts and honor students at Olathe South High School. They received scholarships to Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, but returned to Kansas after just one semester, said Margaret Edison, a friend of the family. They married on Jan. 4.
