Tax increase package signed into law

? Gov. Bill Graves on Thursday signed into law a $252 million tax increase that will raise state sales, cigarette and inheritance taxes, his office reported.

Lawmakers approved the measure May 17 to end a record-breaking 106-day legislative session. Graves and other legislative leaders have said the tax increase probably would not be enough to balance the budget.

Under the law, on July 1, the sales tax will increase from 4.9 cents per dollar to 5.3 cents.

Cigarette taxes will increase by 46 cents per pack to 70 cents, and then another 9 cents to 79 cents on Jan. 1.

Fees corporations pay to do business in Kansas will double, and taxes will be reimposed on property inherited by nephews, nieces and nonrelatives. The bill also includes tax breaks for businesses and a 50 percent increase in income tax credits for poor, working families.
