Lawrence resident is captured after leading police on chase

A Lawrence woman faces numerous charges after she allegedly struck a police officer with her truck door Friday night and led police on a car and foot chase.

Stacy L. Barnes, 36, 1701 W. Fourth St., on Tuesday was in the Douglas County Jail on $2,000 bond.

Barnes was stopped by police about 8:30 p.m. Friday in the 200 block of Wisconsin Street because her Ford Ranger pick-up truck had an expired tag, Lt. David Cobb said.

The officer making the stop also learned Barnes had Douglas County warrants for her arrest for failure to comply with a court order.

Cobb gave this account of what happened after the officer attempted to take Barnes into custody:

Barnes refused to get out of the car and struggled with the officer when he tried to pull her out. After the officer used pepper spray on her, Barnes drove off. The truck’s open door struck the officer as Barnes drove away.

Other officers arrived to assist, and the truck was pursued to the area of Fourth and California streets. The truck hit a cul de sac, and Barnes ran to the 1800 block of West Fourth Street. There, she fell and police caught her.

Barnes is charged with: aggravated battery, attempting to flee from police, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, obstruction of justice, failure to stop at a stopsign and having an expired registration.

She is to appear in court again at 2 p.m. today.
