Music: Campanile anniversary marked with carillon concert

After the seventh bell tolled to mark the hour, a concert for the 50th anniversary of the campanile began Sunday.

About 50 people lounged on blankets, relaxed near Potter’s Lake and sat in lounge chairs around the campanile as Todd Fair, carillonneur at the University of Denver, performed on the Kansas University carillon at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Another concert, featuring Elizabeth Berghout, KU carillonneur, will be at 7 p.m. today.

The two concerts are in honor of the golden anniversary of the campanile. The anniversary of the tower’s dedication, May 27, 2001, passed without much notice last spring, so officials in KU’s School of Fine Arts planned celebratory events for Sunday and today.
