Rain washes out state tourney

? Lawrence High has put its state title hopes on hold.

Rain postponed the first round of the Class 6A state baseball tournament on Friday, and the tournament won’t start until Monday.

“We are going down Sunday night after graduation,” LHS coach David Petry said. “We went down (Friday) and came back. We left at 5:45 a.m. and sat around until 12 o’clock.”

The tournament’s Friday-Saturday schedule will switch to Monday and Tuesday with the same game times. Fourth-seeded LHS (16-6) will open at 11 a.m. Monday against No. 5 Wichita Northwest (16-6). The winner will take on the survivor of the game between top-seeded Hutchinson (19-3) and No. 8 Shawnee Mission South (10-9).

Poor weather conditions created havoc for tournament officials across the state.

Class 5A baseball tournament games scheduled for Friday in Salina were moved to today, with the game times remaining the same. The semifinal and championship games will be played Sunday, and the third-place consolation game has been canceled.

Class 4A at Mulvane managed to complete three of four first-round games in cold, windy conditions before play was suspended.

Class 2A-1A games in Emporia also were postponed until today and will be played at the same times. The semifinal and title games scheduled for today will be moved to Sunday.
