Elfie M. Bailey

Services for Elfie M. Bailey, 102, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Bailey died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community. She had lived at Brandon Woods for 12 years and in Lawrence for 66 years.

She was born May 27, 1899, in Elk City, and was the daughter of James Henry and Alice Prudence (Barnes) Pittman.

Mrs. Bailey was a longtime Lawrence first-grade teacher. She retired from the Lawrence school system about 30 years ago after a long-term teaching assignment at Pinckney School and then at Centennial School when it opened.

She was a member of First Baptist Church. She was active in Kappa Kappa Iota professional sorority, women’s literary clubs, the Noname Club and Gradatum.

She married Lowell E. Bailey. He died Nov. 28, 1988.

Survivors include a son, Bob Lowell Bailey, Dayton, Ohio; a daughter, Marilyn Bailey Wise, Sherman, Tex.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at First Baptist Church.

The family suggests memorials to the church, sent in care of the funeral home.
