Culture: Carillon concerts to honor campanile 50th anniversary

Two concerts on Kansas University’s carillon this weekend will honor the 50th anniversary of the campanile.

The first concert is at 5 p.m. Sunday. Todd Fair, carillonneur at the University of Denver, will play pieces by Albert Gerken, Ronald Barnes and Roy Hamlin Johnson.

KU carillonneur Elizabeth Berghout will present a concert at 5 p.m. Monday. She will premiere pieces by Charles Hoag and Sabin Levi, and also will play works by Gerken and Barnes.

The concerts will last about an hour.

Traffic: KU student killed in accident

A Kansas University student was killed Tuesday in a car accident near Columbia, Mo.

Cassandra Black, 20, ran a stop sign in a 2000 Mitsubishi and broadsided a 1996 Ford pickup, according to Missouri Highway Patrol reports.

She was transported to Boone-Callaway Medical Office in Columbia, where she was pronounced dead.

Black, a fine arts and architecture major at KU, was not wearing a seat belt. The pickup’s driver, Richard Reams, 38, Hallsville, Mo., was not injured.

Higher education: Nebraska official to become KU associate vice chancellor

An official at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will become associate vice chancellor for information services at Kansas University.

Donna Liss, director of information systems and services at Nebraska since 1994, will start at KU June 2.

She will report to Marilu Goodyear, vice chancellor for information services. The department oversees administrative and academic computing, including computing services, academic computing services, networking support services and decision support services.

Liss replaces Cathy Smith, who left last year to become vice president for information technology and chief information officer at Clark University in Worcester, Mass.

Crime: Police investigate theft of internal funds at Conoco

A former employee at Conoco Breakplace, 2330 Iowa, is a suspect in the theft of $5,500 in internal funds, Lawrence Police said.

A Conoco district manager called police Tuesday. The money reportedly was taken in the weeks after March 20, police said.

The suspect is a 22-year-old man. No arrests have been made.
