Lawrence: Police seek suspect who tried to lure youngster

Lawrence Police are seeking the public’s help in finding a man who reportedly tried to entice a little girl into a van Thursday by offering her candy.

The 5-year-old girl ran to her nearby home and was not harmed, Sgt. Mike Pattrick said. The incident occurred between 5:30 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. in the 1200 block of West Fifth Street.

Witnesses told police they had seen the van and its driver but did not see the incident the girl had reported, Pattrick said.

The van has been described as a 1980s model, full-size, tan and brown Chevrolet.

State government: Governor signs legislation approving research facilities

Topeka Gov. Bill Graves has signed into law a bill that would authorize the sale of $120 million in bonds to build a biomedical center at Kansas University Medical Center, a food-safety lab at Kansas State and aviation lab at Wichita State.

Supporters said the expenditure hailed as one of this year’s most significant pieces of legislation was needed to help Kansas secure more federal and private research grants.

In addition to the research bonds, the bill includes $13 million to improve a lab in Wichita that is used by the aviation industry.
