Free State High came within a tennis ball of meeting Lawrence High in the first round of a Class 6A baseball sub-state on Tuesday at Ice Field.

Free State and Topeka High both had 8-12 records so the Kansas State High School Activities Assn. had Firebirds’ coach Mike Hill reach into a box and pull out a tennis ball to determine the No. 7 and No. 8 seeds.

“I pulled out the one with the eight on it,” Hill said, “and so instead of playing Lawrence High here we have to go all the way to Wichita.”

Free State will meet No. 1 seed Wichita Heights at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at McAdams Park in the Air Capital. The other game in Wichita will match No. 4 seed Washburn Rural against No. 5 Emporia.

Lawrence (14-6) is the No. 2 seed and will meet No. 7 Topeka High at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. The other game at Ice Field will match No. 3 Manhattan against No. 6 Junction City at 2:30 p.m. Both winners will play at 7:30 p.m. for the sub-state championship.

Girls Soccer

Lawrence High (8-6-2) secured the fourth seed for this week’s Class 6A girls soccer regionals and will play host to No. 5 Topeka High (6-7-1).

The game, scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Youth Sports Inc. fields, will mark the first time the Lions ever have hosted.

“I’m pretty excited,” LHS coach Keith Nelson said. “I think the girls are playing great soccer and know in their hearts that they can win.”

LHS defeated the Trojans, 1-0, earlier this season.

Sixth-seeded Free State High (5-8-2) will travel to Emporia on Tuesday to take on the No. 3 Spartans.
