Firebirds snap skid, 3-2

? Free State High’s baseball team tripped Blue Valley North, 3-2, in a pitchers’ duel on Thursday.

Firebird pitcher Eric Peterson tossed a four-hitter, striking out 10 and walking just one. He improved to 5-2, outdueling North’s Ryan Ashner, who allowed eight hits.

Free State scored the winning run in the seventh inning. Cassidy Thompson singled then took second on a sacrifice by David Arndt. Thompson advanced to third on a ground ball by Chris Coleman which was booted for an error. Matt Lane then smacked an RBI single.

“We were aggressive at the plate,” FSHS coach Mike Hill said. “We had quality pitching and quality at bats. We competed. Anytime you get great pitching you give yourself a chance.

“Eric Peterson did what a stopper is supposed to do  stop a streak or start a streak.”

The Firebirds (8-11) had a two-game losing streak snapped. Free State will meet Olathe North today in the continuation of a game started Wednesday. The game will be picked up in the second inning with the score tied, 0-0. It will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Free State’s field.
