Everett on disabled list

Arlington, Texas The Texas Rangers placed outfielder Carl Everett on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday and optioned right-hander Rob Bell to Triple-A Oklahoma. The Rangers announced that right-hander Chan Ho Park will be activated from the disabled list to pitch Sunday against Detroit.

M’s shelve Nelson

Seattle Mariners reliever Jeff Nelson was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday because of bone chips in his elbow. Nelson will undergo surgery Friday and miss 4-6 weeks.

Reliever appeals fine

Cincinnati Reds reliever Gabe White plans to appeal a $750 fine for throwing a fastball over Barry Bonds’ head. The left-hander got a letter from the commissioner’s office this week informing him of the fine for his errant pitch on April 27. White insisted he wasn’t trying to hit Bonds.

Osborne out 15 days

Chicago The Chicago Cubs put left-handed reliever Donovan Osborne on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday and recalled Scott Chiasson from Triple-A Iowa.

Griffey hurts calf, talks more about fans

Cincinnati Ken Griffey Jr. had another ache Wednesday a sore calf that turned purple after he was plunked in batting practice.

The Reds outfielder had criticized fans and the media in a diatribe Monday about how he’s been treated since his homecoming in 2000. He cited a television station’s poll and negative comments his family has heard at games.

There were several pro-Griffey banners at Cinergy Field the next night, and radio talk-show callers took up his cause during two days of rehashing his comments.

“I think a lot of people understand where I was coming from,” Griffey said after taking batting practice. “It wasn’t like I was ripping every fan.”

Franco out for season

New York New York Mets reliever John Franco will miss at least the rest of the season with an injury to his left elbow. Franco, who has not pitched since undergoing surgery on the elbow in December, had an MRI exam Wednesday that revealed the injury to the medial collateral ligament and flexor tendon in his pitching elbow.
