City Prep Roundup: Lions Spencer, Blevins medal twice

? Lawrence High’s Nathaniel Spencer shot a 1-over-par 73 to take third medalist honors and teammate Zach Blevins shot a 75 to take eighth at the Leavenworth Golf Invitational on Monday at Trails West Golf Club.

Spencer, Blevins, Camron Flanders (79) and Spencer Wilson (79) totaled 306 strokes to place second in the four-man team competition. Olathe East won with 305 strokes, and Overland Park Aquinas was third at 307.

“It was a nice round,” LHS coach Ron Commons said. “We had a lot of medals to bring home. Nathaniel has been playing real solid all year, and it was really nice to see him continue to do that.”

Lawrence’s two-man team of Jon Moseley (82) and Tom Fulbright (84) placed ninth.

Free State’s four-man team of Scott Marks (82), Mike Gisel (83), Noah Martin (92) and Tim Kuhlman (96) took seventh at 333, and the Firebirds’ two-man team of Aaron Webber (85) and Hamilton Lewis (94) was 13th at 179.

FSHS soccer falls

Topeka Topeka Hayden shut out Free State in the second half Monday and defeated the Firebirds, 4-1, in girls soccer.

Free State (4-8-1) was within 2-1 at intermission following a goal by Katie Vormehr, who was assisted by Meredith Mayo.

“We thought we had a chance at halftime, but we came out and got outplayed in the second half,” FSHS coach Jason Pendleton said. “Hayden showed why they’re the No. 1 team in Class 5A.”

The task won’t be much easier today when Free State travels to Shawnee Mission Complex to take on Shawnee Mission South, the fourth-ranked team in 6A.

LHS tennis thumped

by Pembroke Hill High

Scott Elwell and Brian Allen claimed Lawrence High’s only victory of the day when their Kansas City (Mo.) Pembroke Hill opponents retired, and the Lions suffered an 8-1 tennis loss on Monday at the Lawrence Tennis Center.

“For getting kicked around like this one-sided score, I feel pretty good about it,” LHS coach Dick Wedel said. “Our doubles teams were competitive from start to finish. Just too many unforced errors.”

The Lions will travel to Shawnee Mission East today for the Sunflower League tournament.

“I look at this as a good tuneup for league,” Wedel said. “We won’t see anyone at league who is better than the people we played today.”
